Claudia Onofre, or Ms. Onofre joins the podcast for episode 2. The Beginning of a Special Journey
Ms. Onofre, has dedicated 13 years to teaching kindergarten. Her classes are not just about academics; they are about creating a family atmosphere where every child feels welcomed and loved. When she learned she would be receiving a new student named Navee a young girl who is deaf, Ms. Onofre knew she had to prepare in ways she had never done before.
Ms. Onofre was overwhelmed yet excited. She immediately sought resources, learned some American Sign Language (ASL), and prepared her classroom and students for Navee’s arrival. Claudia’s commitment to inclusion and her proactive approach set the stage for Navee’s successful inclusion.
Building a Culture of Inclusion
From the moment Navee stepped into Ms. Onofre’s classroom, she was not seen as different, but as a welcomed addition to their classroom family. Ms. Onofre explained to her students what it meant to be deaf and taught them basic signs so they could communicate with Navee. The other students were eager to learn and include Navee in every activity.
The presence of Wendy, Navee’s interpreter, played a crucial role. Wendy facilitated communication between Navee and her classmates and teacher, but it was Ms. Onofre’s inclusive approach that truly made Navi feel at home. The students included Navee in their journal drawings, often depicting her with pigtails and her cochlear implants, signifying her acceptance into their lives.

Ms. Onofre’s dedication did not go unnoticed. Despite the challenges, she ensured that Navee’s needs were met without isolating her. Ms. Onofre’s teaching methods evolved to include more visual and kinesthetic learning opportunities, benefitting all her students.
