Series 2 Episode 1
During my 12 years of working with children with disabilities, I taught several learners who were deaf. In retrospect, I realize I knew little about deafness. This compelled me to pursue the stories I share in my second podcast series: Navee’s World. It consists of five episodes, each offering a unique experience in Navee’s world.
After completing the recordings, I had about 8 hours of conversations and storytelling. It took around 80 hours over three months to edit and condense it into a 2.5-hour series. There’s much more to share beyond what’s covered in the podcast. This blog previews the episodes and offers information I want listeners to take away. While you could do this work on your own, what’s another 2 hours for me? I will begin by exploring the central themes of Episode 1 and providing recommendations for teachers and families with resources. I hope this proves valuable to you and sets the stage for Episode 1: The Walkers.
Embracing Inclusion
Brooke Walker and her family adopted Navee when she was four and a half years old, aware of her deafness but unprepared for the journey ahead. In the episode, Brooke stresses the importance of embracing Deaf culture and American Sign Language (ASL) to bridge communication barriers. With the support of Wendy Bowman (featured in Episode 4). The Walkers, with Wendy’s counsel embarked on an adventure that affected their lives in ways they never imagined.
The Power of Community
Brooke’s narrative underscores the importance of support in nurturing an inclusive environment; in schools and the broader community. From educators like Ms. Onofre (discussed in Episode 2), who educated her class about Navee’s unique needs, to the principal and staff who fostered a welcoming atmosphere, collective efforts made a significant impact. Brooke urges schools to educate both students and staff about disabilities, fostering empathy and understanding among all.
Advocating for Change
Brooke’s advocacy sheds light on the urgent need for systemic improvements within the education system. She emphasizes that children like Navee often face challenges due to inadequate resources and limited awareness. Brooke’s journey serves as a poignant reminder that inclusion goes beyond mere physical presence—it necessitates tailored educational strategies and robust support systems (as explored in Episodes 2, 3, and 4).
Recommendations for Families and Teachers
For Families:
- Educate Yourself: Gain insights into Deaf culture, ASL, and your child’s specific needs. Knowledge empowers effective advocacy.
- Advocate Persistently: Stand up for the services and support your child requires. Understand your rights and the educational laws that support them.
- Build Community: Establish a network of supportive individuals—friends, family, and professionals—who can offer guidance and assistance.
For Teachers and Schools:
- Raise Awareness: Educate students and staff about working with deaf children and the significance of inclusion in creating a supportive environment.
- Personalized Education: Recognize each child’s uniqueness and employ diverse teaching strategies that harness their strengths. Consult specialists and utilize tailored curricula to bridge educational gaps.
- Collaborate with Families: Foster open communication and collaboration with families to better understand the needs of each child and achieve positive outcomes.
Conclusion
Brooke Walker’s journey with her daughter Navee vividly illustrates both the power of inclusion and the hurdles that accompany it. Families and educators must unite in advocating for the resources and support systems that facilitate meaningful, inclusive education. By sharing her story, Brooke aims to inspire others to choose love, prioritize inclusion, and forge a brighter future for all children. This episode will illuminate these crucial concepts.
